Academic Councils of Disciplines
The Academic Councils of Disciplines are bodies introduced by the UW Statute adopted on June 26, 2019. At the University of Warsaw, 25 Academic Councils of Disciplines have been established.
The tasks of the councils can be divided into four categories:
- granting doctoral degree (doktor) and habilitated doctor degree (doktor habilitowany);
- ensuring a high level of research activity in a given discipline at the UW (setting criteria for assessing the scientific achievements of the academic staff, coordinating activities related to the evaluation of the discipline, assessing the discipline’s level in relation to international standards, and specifying the criteria employees must meet to be appointed to the council by the rector);
- ensuring that education at the University is based on the latest research results (participating in the establishment of the Teaching and Learning Councils);
- ensuring a transparent and fair academic hiring process, based on high substantive requirements (nominating representatives to recruitment and employment committees, and participating in the periodic evaluation of academic staff).
The Academic Council of Scientific Fields is a body of the University of Warsaw authorized to conduct proceedings for the conferment of a doctoral degree when the dissertation covers scientific issues from more than one discipline within a given field of science, and it is not possible to indicate a single discipline in which the degree is awarded.
